Thank you for your considering to walk with someone on their journey to be fully initiated in the Church!

Why be a sponsor?

Christ calls us all to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Being a sponsor for someone on their journey to be fully initiated in the Church is a beautiful opportunity to directly answer Christ’s call.

Additionally, walking with someone learning about the Catholic faith is a GREAT way to grow in your own faith. Not only will you be reviewing and learning about Catholic teachings, but we’ll also be diving into prayer and how to deepen your personal relationship with God. We want to invest in you, so make the decision to invest in your own faith as well as the faith of your sponsee!

Finally, being a sponsor is FUN. It is so rewarding to walk with individuals as their faith multiplies. It is so beautiful to see how God works in each person’s heart and it is truly a gift to be a part of that journey.

But what if I don’t feel qualified to be a sponsor?

The main role of the sponsor is accompaniment! Someone to walk alongside the catechumens and candidates in OCIA.

You don’t have to know all of the answers to the Catholic faith to be a sponsor! You don’t have to perfectly live out every single tenant of the Catholic faith to be a sponsor! Living out the Catholic faith, conforming your life more and more to Christ, takes your whole lifetime! Knowing all there is to know about the Catholic faith is impossible – Christ and his Church are inexhaustible!

Therefore, we’re looking for people who have been Catholic for at least a year, who can be an example of what it looks like to live out the Catholic faith in different states of life, and who can form relationships with those on the journey.
