Marriage

The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament."

Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1601

The Sacrament of Marriage involves a call from God and a response from two people who promise to build a sacramental partnership filled with love through the help of divine grace. This Sacrament shows a couple how to dive deep into conviction and commitment as they lead each other closer to Heaven.

Couples who are newly engaged and planning to marry in the Catholic Church should begin the marriage preparation process at least eight months before their wedding date. During this time of preparation, couples are invited to deepen their understanding of the vocation of marriage while developing the virtues, communication skills, and spiritual foundation needed to build a faithful, joyful, and lifelong union.

For couples whose marriage took place outside the Catholic Church—whether through a civil ceremony or in another faith tradition—the convalidation process provides a way for that marriage to be recognized as a sacramental union within the Church. Convalidation typically involves a simple ceremony in which the couple renews their vows before a priest or deacon. Once their marriage is convalidated, the couple is able to participate fully in the sacramental life of the Church.

Natural Family Planning (NFP) is a Catholic approach to family life that respects the God-given dignity of marriage and the natural rhythms of fertility. Through NFP, couples learn to observe and understand the natural signs of fertility and infertility in order to responsibly plan or postpone pregnancy. Rooted in Catholic teaching on the sanctity of life and the unity of marriage, NFP encourages communication, mutual respect, and shared responsibility between spouses. Natural Family Planning works in harmony with the body and supports openness to life while strengthening the spiritual, emotional, and physical bond within marriage.

The annulment process, formally known as a declaration of nullity, is a pastoral and judicial process through which the Catholic Church examines whether a valid sacramental marriage was established at the time a couple exchanged vows. Through this process, a Church tribunal carefully reviews the circumstances surrounding the marriage, including the intentions, capacity, and consent of both spouses. Witness testimony and supporting documentation may also be considered. An annulment does not deny that a relationship existed or that the marriage produced meaningful experiences or children; rather, it is a determination that an essential element required for a binding marital union was absent from the beginning. The process is intended to bring healing, clarity, and spiritual peace while helping individuals participate more fully in the sacramental life of the Church.

Seeking Support After a Divorce?

The Archdiocese of Denver’s Healing from Separation and Divorce Program is a confidential service offered to those who are navigating a separation or divorce. Based on Catholic teachings, participants journey through the grieving and healing process with the guidance of trained facilitators who have experienced the journey. Individuals who attend gain wisdom and comfort as they give witness to their pain and loss, while discovering a deeper understanding of God’s love for them. They receive the healing power of Christ through the Church and the Sacraments. Deacons are a liaison between the diocese, the pastor, and the program team to provide support, counseling, guidance and spiritual direction.

Workshops are offered on a weekly basis at various churches throughout the Archdiocese beginning in September and January. To learn more about this ministry, as well as to register, please click the link below.
